Low Sulphite Wine
Here we are lisitng some genuine artisan wines made properly with minimal use of additives, which don’t fall within our categories of “organic, biodynamic or sulphite free”. They are handmade on a very small scale by small family wineries combining traditional techniques with modern advancements.
Many of them farm organically or biodynamically although don’t believe in having to pay annual fees to be certified as such. They don’t see any reason why they should be charged extra for making wines as they’ve always been made.
These wines are very low in sulphites and any of the other 80+ chemicals commonly found in big brand factory produced wines. Many are fermented with the grapes’ own natural yeast, and many have only a light filtering, some have none at all so all the goodness and natural anti oxidants are left in the wine.
They are a very healthy lifestyle choice, and of course when buying these wines you will also be helping small dedicated winemakers, as without customers they would not be able to continue making these fantastic wines..

95 Points Best Cab Franc from Chile Descorchados 2017
93 Points Robert Parker
94 Points James Suckling
We have only 6 bottles and will not be able to get any more!!
Maquis is uniquely situated at the convergence of two rivers on clay, alluvial soils making it potentially the best site in Chile for Cabernet Frank which inspired them to make this stunning wine.
It’s big and silky with red and black fruits with a light spice, then big vanilla coming through on the long finish.
This is something special.

An excellent addition to the Maquis range from this superb Chilean winery. Thier super premium Franco is sensational and this is fantastic too at a more affordable price.
90% Cabernet Franc, 9% Carménère & 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. I don’t have my tasting notes to hand so going from memory only, this is a delicious wine. Big, opulent and very smooth. It’s a bargain at this price.

This artisan Tampesta Albarin is from the DO Tierra de Leon in North Western Spain. It’s a lovely full flavoured wine with body and good mouth feel, having been aged on the lees. Very fresh and natural on the long finish, made by expert Galician winemaker Luis Buitrón, vice-president of the Spanish Federation of Winemakers and president of the Association of Oenologists of Galicia. This vintage is excellent once again.

Tampesta Neko is a brand new wine made from the Godello grape.
Pale gold with good clarity. Some gentle legs. Full and fresh in the mouth with pear drop flavours, well balanced natural acidity and a long dry finish.
This is a lovely fresh wine, low in sulphites, ideal for summer. If you can let it breathe for ten minutes as being a new young wine it will benefit and soften a little.

A fantastic new wine which is a pet project from our favourite Spanish supplier. Cecilia had Rosa Zarza make the wine, and many of you will have enjoyed her reds such as the Incredulo wines and the superb Tinta Rosa and 14 Meses. Well here Rosa has made a superb Verdejo from organically grown grapes. This “Julia” has now been rebranded this vintage under Malcaracter’s name where the wine is actually made, and presentation has changed – we don’t have an up to date image as yet. They are basically all working together producing a small selection of superior wines and it made sense for them to have the “Julia” under the Malcaracter brand.
The wine itself is of course the same excellent quality and is delicious and highly recommended. Low in sulphites so a great healthy lifestyle option.

This organic Rosado de Fermin is a fantastic new organic Rose wine for us.
Elegant, fresh with gentle acidity and lovely flavours. It has become very popular with our regulars and we are very fortunate that we were recently able to get some more as we got the very last stock the winery had left.
It’s difficult to find good quality low sulphite Rose wines and this one is a cracker!

A new wine in a different style! Just 2600 bottles produced.
It is very floral on the nose. Complex flavours, again quite floral with a very long dry finish with notes of citrus. Full body and good mouthfeel, noticeable oak yet with refeshing acidity.
This is somewhere between a clean oaked chardonnay and a bone dry Alsace Reisling. If you’re after something more mainstream in style stick to Carlos’s fantastic white label Albariño.

This is the third red from Bodega Vagal. Biodynamically farmed and organically certified.
It’s a fantastic wine produced at altitude (940 metres) so plenty of fresh acidity. It spent four months in oak.
Very smooth, full flavoured, noticeable oak but not too heavy. A long dry finish. If you like your Spanish Tempranillo with a little oak but not the heavy vanilla style then this is for you!
Ideal with roast meats.

Bodega Vagal is a tiny artisan winery practising biodynamic methods (pending certification) roughly midway between Madrid and Logrono at altitude. They only make three wines and this Cuvee Joana is excellent. In fact I’d go further and say definitely try a bottle as it is something special. Beautifully made with power, grace and purity.

A top blend from Marcello here. His wines are all natural, and we are delighted to have them back after an absence of a couple of years. This blend (2019 vintage) is produced from handpicked grapes which underwent a micro fermentation with natural yeasts prior to being aged in oak for 20 months.
This is a seriously good wine, more savoury and elegant than fruit driven, with noticeable vanilla on the finish.

Marcello Pelleriti is one of Argentina’s finest winemakers, in fact he is the only one to date to have received a 100 point rating from Robert Parker. But he isn’t just an Argentine winemaker, he makes wines in Pomerol too, as the season in France is directly opposite that of Argentina. Sounds like a lot of hard work to me, jetting back and forth every six months!
His vineyards are in the Uco Valley district of Mendoza, one of the very best areas in all Argentina. He works traditionally without pesticides, all grapes hand harvested, then bunch sorted and even sorted by individual grape. The winery works on a gravity feed system, enabling him to make wines naturally with absolute minimal intervention and manipulation.
100% Malbec aged in French oak barriques for 15 months. This Malbec is excellent, elegance and power combined, and is superb value for money.

Maquis is a superb artisan family winery at the confluence of two rivers at the feet of the Andes. This “Lien” was their only wine for the first five years but they have sinced introduced others. It’s a fantastic blend, made in a natural style.
Typical big Chilean nose. In the mouth it is soft and very smooth, elegant and perhaps more savoury than powerful and punchy.
It’s a great wine as you can see from it’s awards.

Rainbows End Cabernet Sauvignon is a fabulous Cabernet. Rainbows End is one of the finest artisan red wine producers in Stellenbosch, and now also makes some very good Chenin Blanc too. Anton Malan’s winemaking is exceptional. He puts in a lot of hard work such as handpicking at dawn and manually punching down of the ferment several times a day, which is richly rewarded when you taste his wines. This Cabernet Sauvignon is excellent – powerful and opulent, with weight on the palate balanced by good acidity and a purity that comes from absolute minimal use of additives.

Grangehurst Cabernet Merlot is a great aged Bordeaux blend from Jeremy Walker. Jeremy ages all his wines on site at the winery for many years, and typically only releases them once they’re at least ten years old! He is the only South African I know of making wines like this. The results are excellent. Big powerful wines, super smooth and fully integrated as the blend has had years to settle. Grangehurst wines are quite an experience and highly recommended. This Grangehurst Cabernet Merlot is full bodied and super smooth, drinking beautifully.
